Prepping Your Home for Summer Vacation: What to Do Before You Go

Summer vacation is all about relaxing, exploring new places, and making memories. But before you pack your bags and head out the door, make sure your home is just as ready for your trip as you are. Taking a few simple steps before you leave can help protect your home and give you peace of mind while you’re away.

1. Secure All Entry Points

Double-check that all windows and doors are locked—even the ones you don’t use often. Consider using smart locks or a security system you can monitor remotely. If you have sliding glass doors, place a dowel in the track to prevent forced entry.

2. Pause Deliveries

A pile of mail or packages is a clear sign no one’s home. Place a hold on your mail through USPS or ask a neighbor to collect it. You might also want to pause subscriptions like newspapers or meal kits.

3. Use Timers for Lights

Set a few indoor lights on timers to turn on and off in the evening to make your home appear lived in. Smart lighting apps make it easy to manage this from anywhere.

4. Unplug and Adjust

Unplug small appliances, electronics, and chargers to prevent fire hazards and save on electricity. Adjust your thermostat to save energy—just don’t turn off your A/C completely, especially in hot or humid climates.

5. Prep for Your Return

Clean out the fridge, take out the trash, and do a quick clean-up so you return to a fresh-smelling, welcoming home.

A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a stress-free vacation and a smooth return. Safe travels!
