How to Safely Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, many of us are looking forward to cookouts, pool time, and spending the holiday with friends and family. But it’s also a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military—a moment of reflection and gratitude we should all take seriously. Whether you’re planning a backyard gathering or a weekend getaway, here are some simple ways to stay safe and make the most of the holiday.

Grill Safely

Outdoor cooking is a Memorial Day staple. If you’re firing up the grill, keep it at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Never leave it unattended and make sure children and pets stay a safe distance away. Double check your propane tank and hose connections before lighting.

Be Smart Around Water

Heading to the pool, lake, or beach? Always supervise children around water, even if they know how to swim. Use life jackets for young or inexperienced swimmers, and follow posted rules wherever you go. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before swimming and reapply regularly.

Celebrate Responsibly

If your celebration includes alcohol, be sure to have designated drivers or plan for rideshares. Fireworks may be tempting, but leave the big displays to the professionals and check your local laws. A safe alternative: sparklers (with adult supervision only!).

Honor the Meaning

Amidst the fun, take a moment to remember what Memorial Day is truly about. Attend a local parade or ceremony, or simply pause for a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time, the National Moment of Remembrance.

Here’s to a joyful, safe, and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. 🇺🇸
